How Much Concrete Does a Fence Post Need?

A typical 4×4 fence post in a 10 in hole, 36 in deep with 6 in of gravel underneath, takes about 1.15 cu ft of concrete: just under two 80 lb bags, or just over three 50 lb bags. Bigger posts need wider holes and more concrete.

Cross-section of a fence post set in concreteA post stands in a round hole about three times its width. Gravel fills the bottom of the hole, concrete fills the rest around the post, and the top of the concrete slopes away from the post. post hole ≈ 3 × post width concrete gravel ≈ 6 in / 150 mm hole depth slope the top away from the post
Concrete fills the hole around the post, above a gravel base. Only that ring of concrete needs buying: the post and the gravel take up the rest.

How to work it out

  1. Hole area: π × (diameter ÷ 2)². For a 10 in hole, 3.1416 × 5² = 78.5 sq in.
  2. Subtract the post: a 4×4 is actually 3.5 × 3.5 in = 12.25 sq in. Concrete area: 66.3 sq in.
  3. Concrete depth: hole depth minus gravel, 36 − 6 = 30 in.
  4. Volume: 66.3 × 30 = 1,989 cu in. Divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet: 1.15 cu ft.
  5. Bags: 1.15 ÷ 0.60 (80 lb bag) = 1.9 bags.

Concrete per post: quick reference

All rows assume 6 in of gravel in the bottom of the hole and no extra allowance. "Buy" rounds up for filling each hole from its own bags.

Sizing the hole

Quikrete's guidance is a hole about three times the post's width, a depth of one-third to one-half of the post's height above ground, plus 6 in, and about 6 in of gravel in the bottom for drainage. For a 4×4 post standing 6 ft tall, that's a hole about 10–12 in wide and 30–42 in deep. Local frost depth and building rules can require deeper holes.
